Decide Frequency of Updates

Determining how frequently you want your tracker to update the location is the first step in choosing a tracker. Interval times can range from every minute to once a day. Some trackers have motion detectors that sleep the device when stationary. However, you still need to determine the update frequency when it is moving.

Charging Timespan

Some devices you can expect to charge daily such as Smartphones, Walkie Talkies and SoS trackers. Asset tracking sometimes needs much longer intervals. A shipping container may need 90 days, on-site tools 30 days, storage containers up to one year. Determine what is convenient for your specific asset.

Tracker Size

The larger the tracker the bigger the battery. Determine the size of tracker you need based on the asset you are tracking. If you are tracking a truck, the larger the better. However, if you are tracking on-site tools, you will need a tracker that can be consealed and does not obstruct the operation of the asset.

Decision Time

Battery life and update intervals go hand in hand. A large tracker that advertises a one year battery life is based on daily updates. The same tracker would only last a few weeks when updating every 3 minutes. Once you know the tracker size you will then need to determine the update frequency based on the required time between charging. Changing from 3 minute updates to 6 minute updates can truly double your devices active time between charges.
